Unmissable Destinations
Búzios is as charismatic
by day as it is by night
» Búzios
Búzios, Rio's exclusive designer label
Armação de Búzios
was a fishing village which earned its fame as a gathering point
for high society in the 1960s after a visit from French actress
Brigitte Bardot. From that point on it became a charming “Tower
of Babel” with its large variety of nationalities, languages
and cultures, all of them welcomed warmly by the town’s
kind inhabitants.
It is now the second most visited city in the state of Rio de
Janeiro and 6th most popular destination in Brazil for tourists
from abroad. And for good reason. It is impossible to resist
its natural beauty and lively oceanfront social and cultural
life. There is something for everyone: Búzios is as charismatic
by day as it is by night.
Each one of its 26 beaches is unique. Some are crowded, others
deserted, some have warm water while others are quite cold,
some are tiny patches of sand while others have vast ocean views.
They are as pleasing to those who love a long walk and a relaxing
swim as much as they are to nautical sports fans – sailing,
surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and wakeboarding. Geribá,
Rasa, Ferradura, João Fernandes, Tartaruga, Azeda and
Azedinha are all must-see beaches.
If, by day, visitors head to the many hot spots along the shore,
at night they gather along a 500 meter stretch, a street right
downtown - Rua das Pedras. This is where people meet up, take
a stroll, have fun, buy designer clothes from the best labels
and try out some of the best international cuisine. It's pure
glamour – a place to see and be seen.
How to get there By car, from the Rio-Niterói bridge,
going along Niterói-Manilha Highway (BR-101) and Rio
Bonito-Araruama (BR-124), to Via Lagos. Regular bus service
from the Novo Rio bus station to the city, which is 170 Km from
Rio de Janeiro. Cabo Frio, only 23 Km away, has a new airport,
which is able to handle large airplane traffic. Several international
airlines are already offering direct flights.
Main attractions
The main cultural hot spot is the Gran Cine Bardot, site of
Buzios’s famous annual film festival. The movie theater
even has a café and a book store.
Along the Orla Bardot (waterfront), you can take pictures of
the full size statues of Brigitte Bardot and of the Fishers,
sculpted in bronze by artist Christina Motta.
In Manguinhos, you can pay a visit to the Windsurfing School,
managed by World Champion Ricardo Winicki, and make a pilgrimage
to the only chapel in the world devoted exclusively to Our Lady
of the Knots.
