Miguel Pereira, from Historical strolls to extreme sports
Miguel Pereira pleases those who love tranquility and relaxing
contact with mountains, hills and crystal clear rivers as much
as it does those who prefer the more adrenalized side of Nature
with extreme sports.
Its mild climate (average of 28º C / 82º F in summer,
19º C / 66.2º F in winter) is considered the third
best in the world, making a visit to the city always a pleasant
choice, as one can enjoy its attractions all year round.
Javari Lake, 3 Km from downtown, is the main center for sports
and tourism activities in the city. Paddle and Pedal Boat rides,
horse rides and horse drawn carriage rides delight children
and adults. Otter Lake, 12 Km away in the Tinguá highlands,
is more rustic and natural.
The winding Santana River crossing the city is shallow and has
clear water with many small falls, creating small beaches, natural
pools and waterfalls ideal for bathing, like the Roncador (Snorer)
and the Vera Cruz.
Dr. Paulo de Frontin Railway Bridge, 13 Km away from Miguel
Pereira, is a popular spot for rappelling, while fans of hang
gliding will find the Rampa do Parapente an ideal location for
take offs.
For walking or riding along trails full of emotions and stories,
the Emperor’s Path is a choice not to be missed. The first
direct trail between the states of Rio de Janeiro and Minas
Gerais, the path was often used by D. Pedro II. Bubbling springs
forming creeks and waterfalls which emerge from native forests
and the “ocean of hills” resulting from the unevenness
of the mountains ensure spectacular photos.
How to get there
By car, via BR 116 and then along RJ 125 to downtown. There
is regular bus service from the Novo Rio bus station. The city
is 618 meters above sea level and 110 Km from Rio de Janeiro.
