Niterói, a center for sports, culture and leisure
Niterói is an urban center surrounded by more than a
dozen beaches ideal for practicing sports and for tasting a
variety of fish and sea food. Although a large city, it still
preserves a certain bucolic atmosphere, of which its inhabitants
are very proud.
Icaraí is its most important beach and is located in
the neighborhood of the same name, the busiest social and commercial
area after the city's downtown area. Its wide sidewalk is ideal
for jogging, strolls or just admiring the beautiful landscape
under the shade of peanut trees and coconut palms, including
Rio de Janeiro on the other side of Guanabara Bay. Volleyball
and Soccer players meet on the beach.
On the bay’s shores, you will find São Francisco
and Charitas beaches, full of beach bars, bars and restaurants,
and nightlife hot spots. Their calm waters are preferred by
fans of sailing, windsurfing and waterskiing. Jurujuba has one
of the oldest fishing colonies - the gathering of the nets in
the afternoon is a sight not to be missed.
Itaipu, in the Oceanic Region, is another fishing colony. If
you arrive early enough you can help pull the arrastão
(a huge fishing net) and buy fish that are still alive. Itacoatiara
(good for surfing), Camboinhas and Piratininga are also nearby.
Those who visit the city shouldn’t miss Mercado de São
Pedro in Ponta D’Areia, which has stands selling fish
on the ground floor and restaurants on the first floor. Another
mandatory activity is a visit to the Niterói Contemporary
Art Museum on the Boa Viagem viewpoint, designed by architect
Oscar Niemeyer, a high point of the city’s thriving local
culture.
How to get there
By car, bus or van, crossing the 13.8 Km long Rio-Niterói
Bridge. On Praça XV, in downtown Rio de Janeiro, there
is a ferry and catamaran station for crossing Guanabara Bay.
Other attractions
Fortaleza de Santa Cruz, a military complex built to protect
Guanabara Bay, at the end of Jurujuba beach, which has a beautiful
panoramic view.
Statue of the Araribóia Indian, a tribute to one of the
city’s founders, in front of the Ferry Station.
The Praça da República urban complex, including
the Town Hall, the Palace of Justice and the State Public Library.
João Caetano Municipal Theater, one of the oldest in
the country.
