Penedo, a Finnish hideaway

If you’d like to feel in touch with Nature while at the same time getting to know a little about the roots and traditions of the Fins, you’ll have a lot to keep you busy in Penedo. Its Nordic culture is revealed by the wood framed homes surrounded by flower gardens, by the typical clothing, by the large variety of crafts in its stores and by the food. By the way, save room for dessert – homemade Finnish ice-cream, sweets and chocolates. They’re irresistible!
This small, yet significant piece of Finland was created by a group of naturalists who arrived in the region in the 1920s to found a new colony. They ended up transforming the area into a tourist center which attracts visitors from various parts of the country and the world. With its climate ranging from cold to mild, cozy inns, busy days and busy nights, Penedo is a popular destination for couples and families with children.

Everyone loves Santa Claus’ house, the “summer residence” of that smiley older gentleman who lives in Lapland with his reindeer - part of the theme park which is located next to Little Finland Shopping Mall. There it is always Christmas, where one can take a picture with Santa Claus every day, and where the souvenir stores offer many choices for presents. The leisure center also includes a food court, an arena for choir presentations, dance and theater groups, and a theater for films and music shows.

Nature also offers countless attractions in Penedo. At the Ecological Tourism Park you can appreciate a large variety of the region’s fauna and flora. The crystal clear waters of the Rio das Pedras cross the entire valley, forming waterfalls and natural lakes ideal for swimming.

The most popular spot is Três Cachoeiras (Three Waterfalls), with falls up to three meters high, a good choice for travelers with children. Cachoeira de Deus (God’s Waterfall), 15 meters high, with many smaller falls, is considered the prettiest, though it requires caution. Trout fishing and guided hikes or horse rides amidst the pine and araucaria trees are also must-do activities.

How to get there
