Ipanema: applause for the sunset
One of Rio’s most charming beaches, Ipanema became internationally
famous as the inspiration for Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes'
song "The Girl from Ipanema". It’s a hot spot
for young people, artists and intellectuals. The neighborhood
has a large variety of hotels, bars and restaurants –
not to mention designer label stores on Visconde de Pirajá
street and the longstanding arts and crafts fair every Sunday
at General Osório square.
Ipanema beach has designated areas for Sand Volleyball and Soccer.
The 2.2 Km long waterfront is perfect for strolls and leisurely
bike rides. It’s as busy by day as it is by night. And
between the two, there is always a unique sight: the sunset
with Gávea Rock and Two Brothers Hill in the background.
It's so beautiful people can't resist applauding.
Location
South Side of the city, between Arpoador beach and Canal do
Jardim de Alá (which connects Rodrigo de Freitas lake
to the sea).
Characteristics
Transparent waters, fine, light colored sand. Waterfront with
bike path, beach bars, life guard stands, showers and restrooms.
Lighting makes it possible to stroll, play sports and swim at
night. On Sunday, the lane closest to the sidewalk is closed
to automobile traffic, becoming a place for leisure activities.
All year long large musical events are staged on the beach.
