Araruama Lake: natural beauty and water sports

The sunset is even more beautiful when it is seen from Araruama Lake, from between the casuarinas and near white blocks of salt and salt makers’ windmills dotting the locale. Every single photo taken in this cinematic scene is an instant post card.

The lake’s extremely salty water comes from the Atlantic Ocean and has a water mirror which extends for 220 Km. The lake’s beaches are calm, with gentle waves, warm (6-7 degrees F below the air temperature) and shallow (averaging 2 meters deep). Good for bathing year round, they are especially pleasing to families with children and the elderly.

All along the shore there are simple bars, volleyball nets and beach soccer fields, and it's also possible to walk or run on the wide sidewalks. Constant winds make the lake an ideal place for water sports: sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and jet skiing. There is always a National or International Championship on the schedule, as well as the staging of plays, exhibitions and artistic shows.

Location and how to get there

Araruama Lake borders the city which carries its name and several others along the Costa do Sol (Sun Coast) in the Region of the Lakes: São Pedro da Aldeia, Iguaba Grande, Cabo Frio and Saquarema. Access to these locations is by way of the Rio-Niterói bridge and two highways: RJ-124 (Rodovia Amaral Peixoto) or Via Lagos, (extension of BR-101).
