Domestic and international flights
The Rio de Janeiro International Airport is the main point of
departure/arrival for the state and for all of Brazil as well.
Many people still call it by its old name - Galeão. But
in 2005, the airport was renamed after Antônio Carlos
Jobim, the composer of the “Samba do Avião”
(Airplane Samba) who became known the world over for his songs
"The Girl from Ipanema" and "Wave".
Located on Ilha do Governador (Governor’s Island), approximately
20 minutes away from downtown Rio de Janeiro, the International
Airport has one cargo terminal and two passenger terminals.
Besides having connections to all over Brazil with domestic
flights, it embarks and receives passengers from around 20 countries
and is able to serve up to 15 million passengers per year.
The International Airport is run by the Brazilian Airport Infrastructure
Company (Infraero), which is also responsible for four other
airports in the state of Rio de Janeiro (see below). Among them,
Santos-Dumont Airport, where shuttle flights connecting Rio
de Janeiro and São Paulo take off and land.
