Agulhas Negras, ecotourism in all its fullness
Agulhas Negras (Black Needles) is a unique
region, for the most part a Nature reserve and one of the most
beautiful places in the state and the country. It’s an
ideal place for those who are looking to be in harmony with
Nature, the sound of crystal clear waters running in the rivers
and waterfalls, the company of birds, mountains and lots of
green all around.
Itatiaia National Park is the main hot spot for hikers and climbers.
That’s where you’ll find Agulhas Negras Peak, the
highest point in the state, and a large variety of lakes, waterfalls
and trails for hiking enthusiasts. Those who prefer horse rides
or adventure sports will also find much to do in the region.
Nestled right in the middle of the Serra da Mantiqueira (Highlands),
the cities here have a cold climate, with freezing temperatures
in winter. But visitors will find shelter and plenty of comfort
in their charming inns and chalets. For their part, the restaurants
offer the most delicious and sophisticated European cuisine
and promote/hold many gastronomical festivals.
The biggest tourist destinations are in the cities of Itatiaia
and Resende, which have quite unique neighborhoods. Penedo is
a place which is strongly marked by its Finnish colonization.
Visconde de Mauá, a traditional gathering place for hippies
and new agers, enchants with the singular charm of its three
villages: Mauá, Maringá and Maromba.
