Where to find the best shopping in the highlands and on the coast

The state of Rio de Janeiro offers countless shopping choices for its visitors, whether they be in one of the state’s 70 shopping malls or, direct from the makers, in stores selling high fashion clothing and arts & crafts, which can be found in abundance on the coast and in the highlands. Rio is the state for high fashion - a national and international trend setter.
The Petrópolis garment industry hub, on Teresa Street, is one of the most important places for shopping in the highlands. Nearby, you’ll find Itaipava, with its Feirinha (Little Market) selling articles of clothing, not to mention its antique stores and furniture and interior design stores. All of the products have reasonable prices.

The Feirarte (Arts Fair), on Praça José Higino (Square) in Teresópolis, brings together clothing designers, as well as craft objects and furniture. Nova Friburgo is famous for its Intimate Apparel Center, its liquor factories, butter cookies and its Cheese-makers School, open daily to visitation, sampling and purchases (phone: 22-2529-4000).

In Cabo Frio, on the coast, you’ll find one of the country's most important hubs for beach fashion, Shopping Gamboa, also known as Bikini Street. Rua das Pedras (street), in Armação de Búzios, brings together the most sophisticated internationally known brands. Paraty is known for its one of a kind caiçara (fisher), quilombola (Afro-Brazilian) and indigenous crafts, as well as for its cachaca stores selling liquors from local distilleries.
