Where to find the best shopping in the highlands and on the coast
The state of Rio de Janeiro offers countless
shopping choices for its visitors, whether they be in one of
the state’s 70 shopping malls or, direct from the makers,
in stores selling high fashion clothing and arts & crafts,
which can be found in abundance on the coast and in the highlands.
Rio is the state for high fashion - a national and international
trend setter.
The Petrópolis garment industry hub, on Teresa Street,
is one of the most important places for shopping in the highlands.
Nearby, you’ll find Itaipava, with its Feirinha (Little
Market) selling articles of clothing, not to mention its antique
stores and furniture and interior design stores. All of the
products have reasonable prices.
The Feirarte (Arts Fair), on Praça José Higino
(Square) in Teresópolis, brings together clothing designers,
as well as craft objects and furniture. Nova Friburgo is famous
for its Intimate Apparel Center, its liquor factories, butter
cookies and its Cheese-makers School, open daily to visitation,
sampling and purchases (phone: 22-2529-4000).
In Cabo Frio, on the coast, you’ll find one of the country's
most important hubs for beach fashion, Shopping Gamboa, also
known as Bikini Street. Rua das Pedras (street), in Armação
de Búzios, brings together the most sophisticated internationally
known brands. Paraty is known for its one of a kind caiçara
(fisher), quilombola (Afro-Brazilian) and indigenous crafts,
as well as for its cachaca stores selling liquors from local
distilleries.

Along this 2 Km stretch, there are approximately 1,000 factory
outlets of small and medium sized producers, selling clothing
and accessories. It’s open Mondays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.;
Tuesday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday from 10
a.m. to 5 p.m.
Itaipava
Feirinha de Itaipava (Little Market)

A pavilion with 390 stands selling articles of clothing for
men, women and children. It’s open Saturday, Sunday and
on Holidays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Wednesday from 11 p.m.
to 6 a.m.
Teresópolis

More than 800 clothes, arts & crafts and wooden, leather
and bamboo furniture exhibitors. It’s open Saturday, Sunday
and on Holidays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Friburgo

Close to 900 lingerie makers, with stores opening from Monday
through Friday, 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. and on Saturday from 9
a.m. to 4 p.m.
Cabo Frio
Shopping Gamboa (Bikini Street)

More than 70 stores full of bikinis, swimsuits, Speedos, beach
wraps, bags, hats and other accessories, in a space covered
by lily shaped awnings. It opens every day at 9 a.m. High season,
the stores stay open until midnight.
Búzios

Approximately 100 beach fashion stores with clothing and accessories
from big national and international brands. From Monday to Thursday,
stores open at 10 a.m. and close at midnight. Fridays, Saturdays
and Sundays, they're open from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m.
Paraty
Historical Center

Close to 100 stores, opening at 10 a.m. and closing around midnight.
They sell the traditional wooden canoes made by the Saco de
Mamanguá fishing village, decorative objects made with
banana fibers and baskets made with palm flowers, wicker and
grass from the Quilombo Campinho da Independência (Afro-Brazilian
community, originally founded by fugitive slaves) and crafts
made of wood, feathers and colorful seeds by the Guarani Indian
people.
