» The Environment
Center for debates and ecological preservation
Rio de Janeiro is a state that is intrinsically
connected to nature, with a strong vocation for ecological tourism.
It is extremely attentive to and active with reference to matters
involving the environment.
In the rural areas, highlands and coastal regions, you can find
landscapes like no others, framed by one of the ecosystems with
the highest levels of biodiversity on the planet, the Atlantic
Forest: mountain ranges, oceans, lakes, rivers and crystal clear
waterfalls.
Rio de Janeiro has eight State Parks (Chacrinha, Desengano,
Grajaú, Ilha Grande, Tiririca and Concórdia Highlands,
Três Picos and Pedra Branca) and ecological and biological
reserves in Juatinga, Guaratiba and Araras.
Among its five National Parks are the Bocaína and Órgãos
Highlands, Itatiaia, Restinga de Jurubatiba, as well as Tijuca
National Park, the largest urban forest in the world.
In addition to all of this natural beauty, there are other areas
that are the result of human interference, among them the Flamengo
Earthwork, which brought more than 1.2 million m2 of green area
to the waterfront of its capital city, Rio de Janeiro.
All of this considered, it's no surprise the state is an influential
center for debates on matters concerning ecology. Rio has been
the host to large events of the United Nations, like the World
Conference on Environment and Development, ECO-92, which brought
together representatives from 175 countries and was considered
the most important conference of its kind in the 20th century.
