» People in Rio
Happy, hospitable, warm and party loving par excellence
Just like the state of Rio de Janeiro’s
natural beauty, historical richness and cultural diversity,
its people is also one of a kind. In the capital city, the countryside,
the highlands or on the coast, Rio's inhabitants have their
own unique traits, but they also have much in common: their
good demeanor, kindness, warmth, hospitality and their love
of a good party.
The population is a successful cultural mix of the state’s
first inhabitants – Portuguese, Africans and Indians –
and the legacy of the many ethnicities which came afterwards:
Germans, French, Swiss, Italians and Spaniards. It's no accident
that the highland cities have a predominantly European touch
and every year they hold ethnic and gastronomic festivals in
homage to these peoples.
In the highlands, on the coast or in the countryside, there’s
always something to celebrate. The cities’ calendars are
full of events maintaining cultural, folk and religious traditions
year round, like Patron Saint parties, Folia de Reis, Festa
do Divino, June Festivals, horse rides and rodeos. There’s
also the Tomato Festival in Paty do Alferes, the Flower Festival
in Nova Friburgo and the Cachaca Festival in Paraty. There’s
a party for everything! Not to mention Carnival, the event that
most demonstrates the people's joy and spontaneity.
There are those who say the tranquility and good demeanor of
Cariocas and Fluminenses, as those who live in the capital and
other cities of Rio are called, is due to the natural beauty
surrounding them: paradisaic beaches, mountains with rivers
and waterfalls in the background, true ecological sanctuaries
in the Atlantic Forest. Honestly, with so many privileges, how
could the people of Rio not be special?
