Rio: cultural industry hub
8.May.2008
Carioca culture doesn’t thrive off music and parties alone. Those who think Rio de Janeiro's only large cultural event is Carnival are wrong. The city has been a pioneer in audiovisual production in Brazil. The nation’s first movie theater, first projection and first film produced all happened here.
The state of Rio de Janeiro is a hub for the Brazilian cultural industry. There are innumerous cultural events every year in diverse areas like, fashion, music, cinema, literature and many others. Yearly, events take place like: Fashion Rio, Rio Festival, Búzios Cine Festival (Film Festival), Rio das Ostras Jazz & Blues Festival, Anima Mundi (Animation Festival), FLIP (Paraty International Literature Festival), among others.
Fashion Rio is one of Brazil’s largest fashion events. The coming edition will set trends for the spring-summer season and will be held from June 7-13 at the Marina da Glória (Glory Marine). During the event, which happens twice a year, besides the collections launched by the most important brands of clothing and accessories, a parallel trade fair called Fashion Business is held, where new designers show off their creations to storeowners and international buyers.
Besides fashion, the state of Rio de Janeiro has the Rio Film Festival, which has been taking place since 1999. In 2008, it will be held from September 25th to October 9th. For its part, the Búzios Cine Festival (Film Festival) is going into its 14th edition. Normally, the event takes place in the month of November. The dates of the coming edition have yet to be released. Anima Mundi, an animation festival, has been happening since 1992, and will be carried out July 11-20.
This year, FIRJAN (Rio de Janeiro Federation of Industries), has introduced the competition Curto Criativo (Creative Short Films), to provide incentives for new talent. The objective is to award university film and media students, so that they can produce their first professional short film. The winning short films will participate in the Mostra Rio Criativo (Rio Criativo Show), to take place at the National Fine Arts Museum in May, and will also be shown on Canal Brasil (T.V. channel) and at the Cine Glória movie theater.
Casa Cor is the country’s largest and most important event for the architectural and interior design market. Held in Rio de Janeiro since 1991, its date has yet to be defined for 2008. The Rio das Ostras Jazz & Blues festival has been taking place since 2003 in the city of Rio das Ostras, located along Rio’s Costa Azul (Blue Coast) and this year it will occur May 21-25.
In the sphere of literature, one highlight is the Paraty International Literature Festival – FLIP – which has been held every year since 2003. This year, FLIP will take place July 2-6. Rio de Janeiro also hosts the Bienal do Livro (Book Biennial) with its more than 25 years of success - the next edition is scheduled for 2009.
Several events related to visual arts also take place, like the Santa de Portas Abertas (Open Door Saint), Rio de Janeiro Antique Fair, Festival de Arte e Gastronomia das Vargens (Vargens Art and Gastronomy Festival), among others. Rio de Janeiro has also hosted many musical events like Rock in Rio, which has ended up becoming an international brand name. All this proves that Rio isn’t just another place on the map, but a main attraction in the world of culture.
